When I read Genesis 1:4+5 I was struck by the fact that God decided to actually give a name to the light and the darkness. They were the first things to ever receive a name, to get a word attached to them.
It reminded me of a passage I once read about language being like poppies; growing, giving seed and growing again.
So let’s plant beautiful words so that even more beauty will come up :)
“The word gymkhana, Daniel said, is a wonderful word, a word grown from several languages.
Words don’t get grown, Elisabeth said.
They do, Daniel said.
Words aren’t plants, Elisabeth said.
Words are themselves organisms, Daniel said.
Oregano-isms, Elisabeth said.
Herbal and verbal, Daniel said. Language is like poppies. It just takes something to churn the earth round them up, and when it does up come the sleeping words, bright red, fresh, blowing about.
Then the seedheads rattle, the seeds fall out. Then there’s even more language waiting to come up.”
From the book Autumn by Ali Smith

And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
